Apprentice and Adept weapons consist of staves which often fire multiple magic bolts at once. All staves also have a radial knockback attack, Arcane Surge ("Protean Surge" for Series EV), which scales in size with the weapon's Knockback Bonus. Both attacks can be charged up for greater effect.

The size of a staff is absolutely inconsequential for Series EV and only affects the distance projectiles are released from all other users.

Any given staff for DPS should have its Additional Projectiles prioritized, upgraded whenever possible until it caps which is usually "+5." The player should focus either the weapon's base damage or elemental damage. A high charge rate may also be desired for higher DPS through partially or fully charged shots, compared to auto-firing.

Later into game progression, a charge rate of "+70" or higher is recommended. Higher DPS is possible with faster charging, but the timing window to not fully charge up shots is more strict. If any staff's primary attack is unleashed at 100% charge, the large kickback prevents the hero from shooting again until they recover. Upgrading projectile speed to the ~30k limit is advised as well.

Distinct Stats[]

  • Knockback Bonus: Determines the maximum radius and knockback strength of the Arcane Surge.
  • Charge Speed Bonus: Determines the rate weapon attacks are charged up. Effectively caps at +127. Negative values are treated as +0.
  • Additional Projectiles: The number of extra projectiles fired per volley. Usually caps at +5 for a total of six shots. Only upgradable on every fifth item level minus one (4, 9, 14, 19, etc.)
  • Projectile Speed: Determines the velocity of projectiles. Can be upgraded up until ~+30,000.

Projectile Spread[]

Most staves can fire up to six magic bolts per attack in a horizontal fan spread; the player has to get up close if they want all shots to hit the same target. Other projectile spreads usually make it easier to land every shot from a distance and thus make for better DPS staves in general. Examples of weapons with different shot patterns are listed below.

List of Mage Weapons[]

  • All random weapon drops from enemies and chests will be Apprentice weapons if everyone in the game lobby is currently an Apprentice/Adept.
  • By default, any specific mission victory rewards below are guaranteed if the player is an Apprentice or Adept. Series EV has a 50% chance, 25% for Jester and Summoner, to receive the corresponding weapon.

Random Drops[]

There are many names for each graphical type of an Apprentice staff. All staves have the same type of attack, projectiles and AoE blast, but stats vary. Those stats are the determining factor of the strength of the staff; the staff's individual look is irrelevant to its strength.

These weapons are randomly dropped on some or all maps of the game.
