The Dark Elf Mage, Necromancer or Shaman is a ranged caster who shoots fireballs, summons and revives Skeletons and heals other enemies nearby.

Behavior[]

Dark Elf Mages typically start summoning Skeletons the moment they see a target, then proceed to cast fireballs at it. The Skeletons inherit their master's elemental affinity. If the mage either falls beneath a certain health threshold or any of its servants are knocked down, it may cast a healing spell to resurect them and/or restore its own health and that of all non-boss enemies near it by a small percentage of their respective max HP. This spell has a base spherical radius of 8.80, or 880uu; its area of effect is 10% larger on Hard, 20% on Insane and 45% on Nightmare (and presumably Ascension) difficulty.

Mages will back away from heroes who get too close, unless they are invisible. Skeletons summoned by mages only die for good when their master is defeated.

In Wizardry[]

The Servants Quarters's Wizardry challenge features mages as the only spawning monster, alongside the Skeletons they animate. All but 1-2 Dark Elf Mages are invincible at any given time. Regardless if they are vulerable to damage or not, defenses will never detect or target any of the mages in this mission. In Redux, magunprotected mages appear golden to the hosting player.

Notes/Tips[]

  • Like other enemies with a ranged attack, the dark energy around Creep Doors does not protect Dark Elf Mages from damage. This is never the case in Wizardry, however.
  • Watch out for Dark Elf Mages in large groups. If left unchecked, their necromantic abilities can create a dangerous horde of undying Skeletons to breakthrough your blockades.
    • Lightning Towers are one of the best group counters to mages. They can utilize their Skeletons and/or other frontline allies to chain-attack them from afar and through map obstacles, stun-locking them almost completely as they are electrocuted.
  • Deadly Striker Towers and SAM Units have increased target priority on mages.
  • The Skeletons are immune to Gas Traps regardless of elemental affinity.
  • Purity Bomb does increased damage to Dark Elf Mages and Skeletons specifically.
