The Harpoon Turret or Ballista is a Squire/Countess defense. It is a large crossbow with a wide range and medium-high damage.

Usage[]

The Harpoon Turret shoots piercing bolts which can hit up to 12 (?) enemies in a straight line. It is the least durable Squire tower, but protecting it in walls and Reflection Beams is not a total necessity, even on Nightmare.

Harpoons are viable throughout the course of game progression. Early on, the fact they deal generic damage means that no Magic Blockades, Darkness Traps or Strength Drain Auras are required for the tower to damage all enemies. By the endgame, where auras are massive in size, Fireball and/or Lightning Towers are usually preferred. Harpoon Turrets have a special use case in Embermount Volcano -- to aggro the many Ogres that come to the south core away from it -- to the ground-level bridge instead.

In Redux, fired harpoons travel faster, thus improving the turret's accuracy.

Tips[]

  • Similar to the Apprentice/Adept's attack towers, a defense stat ratio around 2:1 (Damage:Rate) will best optimize the DPS of Harpoon Turrets.

Notes:[]

  • On Console, Harpoons will target enemies through any surface like a deadly striker tower, and they have very slow aiming + projectiles are off centered.

  • 7.29: Changed to aim at center-of-target, rather than with an aim-offset, resolving harpoon missing case.
  • 7.17d: Fixed Harpoons spawn height offset which caused them to sail over the heads of short enemies.
